1920's Dresses are lighter and brighter and shorter than ever before. And also
the flapper is one of short bobbed or shingled hair, straight loose knee-length
dresses with a dropped waistline, silk or rayon stockings with garters, heavy
makeup, and long beaded necklaces.
Fashion for men in America
during the 1920's is greatly influenced by prominent figures and heroes of the
era. Many athletes such as Football players Red Grange and the Four Horsemen of
Notre Dame, for instance, influenced the style of coats like the raccoon coat
and the camel hair polo coat. An enormous craze for leather driving jackets was
inspired by the world famous aviator, Charles Lindbergh. The Prince of
Wales provided great taste in suits.
POLITICS
The 18th amendment to the U.S. constitution went into effect,
prohibiting the making, selling, possession, and consumption of alcoholic
beverages. During this period of time you might be affected by the Dow Jones
industrial average continued to rise and set new records. Many start to panic,
and investors started to get rid of their stocks trying to make as much money
from them. This caused unemployment and several problemsin the economy to rise.
GENDER ROLES
During the roaring 20’s a law passed that gave the women the right to
vote. African Americans did not have the right to drink at a water fountain
where white people also drank from, also use different doors for stores, and
they were not able to go to the same school neither. Until the NAACP was formed
it was a group that wanted to let people know how African Americans were
treated.
CULTURE
Jazz is the main form of popular concert music during this century. The jazz
age came about with artists like Bessie Smith and Duke Ellington. Some famous
dances were inspired by African style dance moves, like the shimmy, turkey
trot, buzzard lope, chicken scratch, monkey glide, and the bunny hug. Also, the
cake walk, which was developed by slaves.
Dance marathons are done weekly, everybody enjoys all kinds of music but
especially jazz. In some occasions the King of Jazz, Louis Armstrong might also
join.
